Surgeons take top spot for gastro-reflux disease

Surgeons take top spot for reflux disease in the Houston and Cypress Texas area. Gastro reflux disease is a very common problem. Also known as heartburn, this problem is usually caused by more than just too much acid being produced in the stomach. Antacid medications, commonly prescribed to treat reflux disease, may relieve the symptoms in many cases by neutralizing the acid coming up in the esophagus; however, these medications do not address the actual problem.

The valve between the esophagus and the stomach is design to stay closed and prevent fluid and food from refluxing into the esophagus after we eat. In most cases of reflux disease, this valve is not working right. There is a mechanical problem, and the patient needs a mechanic.

This is where surgery comes into play. Surgery can recreate the valve to prevent the reflux. The acid is no longer a problem since it stays in the stomach (which is supposed to have acid in it to help digestion). This allows people to get off these medications and live a life free of heartburn.

Traditionally, surgery meant a big open operation to fix the diaphragm hernia if present and then wrap the top of the stomach around the esophagus to prevent the reflux. Over the last ten years, laparoscopy has changed the invasiveness and recovery from the surgery, but it still involved a big operation and wrapping the stomach. Today, for many patients, we can do it all through the mouth without any incisions.

There is no reason for anyone to rely on medications to mask the symptoms of their disease. For most people, the real problem can be fixed with a day surgery operation that offers 75% of patients a life free from heartburn and pills more than 5 years out from surgery. Don’t wait any longer. Come find out how you can get off those pills and live heartburn free forever!
