Top bariatric surgeons in Houston and Cypress Texas carry a lot of tools in their bag. We need them. Endoscopy is a tool that is invaluable in my experience. As a foregut surgeon who operates on the stomach every single day (whether it is for weight loss or reflux disease), being able to use and endoscope to see inside the stomach is a must. Advanced endoscopy is needed to remove foreign bodies, assist with surgery, or simply to make a simple diagnosis sometimes. Without being able to do these procedures, a surgeon (and their patient) could be at a significant disadvantage.
For example, I received a call from another surgeon in the Houston area who does bariatric surgery about a girl with a malfunctioning band in her stomach. The particular case had many complicating factors, but doing the surgery laparoscopically was not going to be possible. He did not want to open her because she was pregnant, and open operation would be a big risk for stimulating premature labor. Because I had the experience of removing these with the endoscope (all through) the mouth, we brought her to my hospital where we successfully removed the band. Mother and child are doing well to this day.
Finally, when deciding who your surgeon is going to be, do a lot of research on them. See what their experience is, ask them what makes them a good surgeon, and make sure they are friendly. It takes more than skill and bedside manner alone to make a good surgeon. It takes a relationship. I’m just saying, build a relationship with a surgeon who carries a little black bag full of stuff!
