I am about to start a new weight-loss program (dieting, exercising, etc.), what medical steps should

It is always exciting to plan out a new start to a healthier lifestyle, but before hitting the gym and grocery, there are a few things we should consider.

First, we must we aware of our overall health condition. This means not only knowing if we are physically fit to do certain exercises, but also where we are in terms of overall physical fitness. It may be appropriate to see you primary care physician and have him or her clear you for exercise before you start. Also, consider how much exercise you are getting now and make a plan that will slowly get you to your goal without hurting yourself. Remember, it is important that you exercise on a regular basis; therefore, work up to intense workouts and keep it fun. If you don't enjoy it or it hurts you, then you will not keep doing it.

Next, take into consideration what sort of diet you are going on. There are low carb diets, low protein diets, and low fat diets. What kind of eater are you? What do you eat the most of? If you are a heavy carb eater, then a low carb diet will work best for you; and so on and so. Once you have decided where you will cut the calories out, then make a grocery list for the upcoming week with your meals planned and stick to that diet only. Eliminate fast foods and drinks with calories in them. This is harder than it sounds and may take a great deal of practice before you can cut it all out completely.

Finally, you must get motivated by setting a goal and sticking to it no matter what comes, but be realistic. Setting several small goals in succession is better than setting one large goal. So, lets say you ultimate goal is to lose 50 pounds, then set up a realistic goal of losing two pounds a week or ten pounds a month. These small goals are more likely to be successful and you can count on hitting you major goal in five months.

Get excited, plan your exercises and make a diet plan. Motivate yourself and set the goals you want to achieve. There is nothing you cannot accomplish if you set your mind to it and work hard. So, go for it!
